Deja-Doom (aka, Do not read this post with Safari):
Chances are if you’re loading this page in Safari (tested on multiple variants of 10.4 up to 10.4.5, on PPC and Intel boxen) you aren’t reading this unless it’s been fixed in a security update, as the image below crashes anything webkit-based in a very hardcore way. Actually, it crashes anything using ImageIO in a hardcore way, which includes the Finder and Preview.app and apps based on Webkit and WebCore…
A vulnerability that I have mentioned now has manifested in several web sites already. Check this one out ONLY on Camino or Firefox. You have been warned.

C-Command Blog » SpamSieve 2.4.3:
# Improved SpamSieve’s accuracy by counteracting various spammer tricks.
# Removed the delay, when using Apple Mail on Tiger, between choosing “Train as Good” or “Train as Spam” and when training actually started.
# The Entourage scripts now report progress partway through bulk trainings and allow you to cancel. They also warn if it looks like you’re training SpamSieve with too many messages, and they’re better at preventing duplicate categories from being created in Entourage. The “Train Spam” script now removes the spam messages from the server.
# Growl notifications from people in the address book now include the “To” address for mailing list messages. This makes it easier to decide whether to ignore the notification.
# Fixed bug that caused part of SpamSieve’s corpus to be written to disk incorrectly when running on Intel. In most cases, no ill effects would have been observed, and SpamSieve will repair the corpus file the first time you launch 2.4.3.
# Improved the error messages.
# Improved the display of the demo time remaining.
# Updated the localizations.
Although not free but I think this is one of the best anti-spam software available on the Mac today!
MacNN | New flaw crashes Safari, Finder:
A blogger has identified an apparent flaw in the Apple’s Mac OS X graphics display engine, ImageIO, that will crash the company’s Safari Web browser and other system applications, including the Finder. The flaw [link: warning, will crash Safari], posted by DrunkenBlog, crashes anything using the Mac OS X ImageIO API including Finder, Preview, and applications based on Webkit and WebCore — Apple JavaScript/HTML display engine for Safari and other applications. ImageIO reportedly hangs during an EXIF routine, and images of the specified type are already floating around on the Web according to the blogger, who comments on Apple’s general security standing. “I haven’t met anyone within Apple that’s been around awhile who wouldn’t admit over beers that they’d be mighty nervous dropping OS X as it currently stands into the orgy Windows swims in, so I’m always amused at what shows up around the Web, and less amused by the pundits feeding it to them.” The report notes that the bug — which only affects Tiger and won’t crash Camino or Firefox — has been reported in Apple’s system; however, as with most security issues, Apple has not publicly responded.
You have been warned!
I guess Camino will be my main browser again.

OpenOffice.org just released version 2.0.1 for the Mac. This version still requires X11 but for those who are use to Unix should not worry about the different look-and-feel of X11. To the others, get NeoOffice. ![]()

Microsoft Delays IE’s ActiveX D-Day:
Microsoft is moving full steam ahead with a plan to permanently modify the way Internet Explorer renders multimedia content on Web pages, but in what amounts to an admission that the changes could be disruptive, the software maker plans to give Web developers an extra 60 days to continue making preparations.
Web developers comply! Ha! This is very good news to those stubborn web developers who refuse to ensure that their sites are cross-platform! You’re given 60-days to fix the site and make sure that MS IE will be able to properly (and legally) render it. This is your chance to make sure that your site can be rendered on Safari, Camino, Firefox, Opera and Konqueror!

Microsoft says Vista more ’secure’ from attacks – INQ7.net:
VISTA, the next-generation operating system of Microsoft, will have more security features that will protect users from “offline” and online attacks, a Microsoft security expert told local reporters on Wednesday.
Steve Riley, senior program manager of Microsoft’s security business and technology unit, said that Vista will definitely address more security issues inherent in Microsoft Windows operating system.
“In the past, security might have not received a lot of thought in the design of the operating system. Right now, it is part of the design,” Riley said, when asked to comment on how security features will be integrated into Vista.
What was that again? Security was not an integral part of your OS design before Vista? Ha! And I hear Microserfs say that XP is secure!

Chris Dickman: Surprise! Your Favorite Application Is Now Open Source at Graphic Design Forum Blogs:
How would you react if Adobe or Quark decided to make an application that you relied on for your graphics or publishing work open source? To start, the entire code base would be released under the GPL (GNU General Public License), which would not only place the code in public hands, but make ongoing development completely transparent. While there’s little chance Adobe or Quark will ever go this route, that’s exactly what Xara Corp., a small British developer, has decided to do with its Xara illustration application.
With Photoshop being one of the most requested application/candidate to be ported to Linux, Xara, I think realizes that for them to get a chunk of the Open Source market is to go fully open. Xara’s application is no Photoshop but it is the next best thing. Gimp will always be there, of course.
Now, if only Adobe will port Photoshop Elements to Linux – that will surely have them cover all their bases. ![]()

Philippines moves down in global IT ranking–WEF – INQ7.net:
THE PHILIPPINES has moved down in a 2005 World Economic Forum (WEF) report that ranks countries in terms of their information technology infrastructure and policies. From a ranking of 67 in the 2004 edition of the report, the Philippines now ranks 70. In 2003, the Philippines ranked 69.
Why aren’t I surprised? The government plays a huge role here and I mean really huge. They should mandate broadband to be affordable to schools – residents and business enterprises may be able to afford the cost but public schools. Or make a special price for public schools OR a bundled package for the Department of Education so they can equip the schools. What the heck, what is to equip if some schools do not even have classrooms?! Shesh!
Also, make sure that they get more scholars trained in research rather than having call center agents scholarships. Don’t get me wrong but I admit that call center is good business here and it does help generate jobs. However, we can do better if we have IT talent with higher competencies.
At the rate the government is providing very little funding to the Human Development arm of CICT, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Philippines is ranked 100 next year!
