Firefly!

April 30, 2006

Wired 14.05: PLAY:

Joss Whedon’s Firefly was canceled in 2002, but don’t tell the Browncoats. These superfans continue to produce weekly podcasts and engage in live-action role-playing games inspired by the TV show. Browncoat Andrew Schultz recently raised $1,300 in 24 hours to help Fox produce a second season. Studio officials scoffed, saying that fan funding is “simply not a realistic scenario.” But the Browncoats aren’t giving up. They’re looking into licensing the rights to create and distribute new Firefly episodes on DVD or on demand – an arrangement that would cost millions. “I have no doubt that there will be new stories, whether they are in comic book form, a movie, or a new TV series,” Schultz says. “It’ll happen; it’s just too good to let die.”

Wow! I just saw Serenity (again for the Nth time) last night and I enjoyed it – was like the first time I saw it. :) I sure wish that there is a next season, though. :P

Open Source Adverts

April 29, 2006

We have heard lots of things, mostly funded by Microsoft, about how Linux sucks. If you read the local papers, you will see tons of full-page adverts on the superiority of Microsoft over all competition. Red Hat made some really cool adverts that I think should be openly distributed so more people will see why we go ga-ga over open systems and open source. :)

Smart releases rates for 3G services

April 29, 2006

Smart to begin commercial 3G service in May – INQ7.net:

BEGINNING May 1, Smart Communications Inc. said it will start charging post-paid and pre-paid subscribers of its 3G service.Smart said that subscribers using 3G-capable handsets will now pay certain rates to enjoy applications such as live video streaming from two major television networks and 3G downloads of full music tracks and video clips.

This is so cool! I am now tempted to dump Globe and get myself a 3G enabled phone. Based on the article, PHP20/hour of surfing is not that bad considering that you can practically surf anywhere. This will kill their PLDT WeRoam services! hahaha. Unless PLDT WeRoam upgrades to 3G, now that will be better… even better if they support ExpressCard/34. :)

I wonder what the coverage is (for 3G). How will Globe complete now? Hmmm…

Microsoft’s Live Shopping does not support non-IE browsers

April 29, 2006

TechCrunch » Microsoft Live Shopping Launches – But No Firefox:

Live.com Shopping launched today (official blog post), and all I see is a big message saying they don’t support Firefox. It doesn’t work with Safari or Opera either (same Firefox error message for all non IE browsers). The entire Mac audience has been shut out of Live Shopping. I’ll fire up my Windows machine to test it out later.

I say, “who cares?” I mean, 9% of my blogs visitors use IE, the rest are either Safari or Firefox/Camino. IE still has the numbers probably because it is embedded in the OS but most of the users I know are Firefox users! Hmmm…

Explorer Destroyer!

Well, I still do not want those IE-loving Microserfs to be blocked out of the site but as soon as the number of IE-using visitors decreases, I will take some drastic actions. :P

Free 3D Modeling Software

April 27, 2006

Google SketchUp (free):

Google SketchUp is an easy-to-learn 3D modeling program. Using a few simple tools you can create 3D models of houses, sheds, decks, home additions, woodworking projects-even space ships. You can add details, textures and glass to your models, and design with dimensional accuracy. Once built, you can place your models in Google Earth, share them with others by posting them to the 3D Warehouse, or print hard copies. Google SketchUp is a great way to discover if 3D modeling is right for you.

Coolness! I wonder how it fares against Blender. :P
