OpenOffice.org 2.0 sans X11

August 31, 2006

One of the OpenOffice.org Mac OS X Porting Team will be presenting the X11-less OpenOffice.org 2.0 version at Apple Expo in Paris two weeks from now. With this new version, I am wondering what will happen to NeoOffice Aqua. Hmmm… two versions from the same tree. :)

Well, whatever happens, the Mac users will surely have more options to replace Micro$oft’s Office. :P

Goopple?

August 30, 2006

Apple Computer Inc. on Tuesday said that Eric Schmidt, chief executive officer of Google Inc., was elected to the iPod maker’s board of directors.Schmidt also sits on Google’s board of directors and Princeton University’s board of trustees.

Google CEO Joins Apple’s Board

Now this is very interesting! Apple and Google are now poised to give a one-two punch against Microsoft! With the recent Google Apps for your Domain service, I am hoping that Apple will take advantage and leverage Google’s services and migrate .Mac to this service. Imagine the possibilities:

  1. iDisk works with Google’s storage that stores Writely and Google Spreadsheet. The much rumoured Numbers will definitely benefit from this as well.
  2. iWeb works with Google Apps for your Domain Web Pages like what I did with mine.
  3. Mail.app moves to Google-hosted GMail service. Full 2GB of storage for each .Mac user.
  4. .Mac Group moves to GoogleGroups.
  5. iChatAV is now compatible with Google’s GTalk.
  6. Best of all, .Mac becomes FREE!!!!!!

What do you guys think?

New Opera version!

August 27, 2006

This new version is thought controlled! Hurry, download it now. BTW, only works if you are an intelligent computer user (sorry, no Windows support hehehe).

Solaris! Solaris! Solaris! (to the tune of Steve Ballmer’s "Developers! Developers!”)

August 26, 2006

Solaris is open source, and gaining huge share (to my friends in the analyst community: you should stop saying the x64 market is characterized as a Windows and Linux market – when it’s obvious there’s a growing Solaris market on x64 systems)

Jonathan Schwartz’s Weblog

I have been trying to get my hands on the latest Solaris build. Tried to run the old build on my MacBook Pro (under Parallels Desktop) but just could not make it work! I know that the forum is there to help out but I wish I had direct access to the guys who really use Solaris on MacBook Pro (the same way I can rely on the Sun Java Evangelists when I need my Java compass checked!). I will see if the new release of Nexenta OS will install. Stay tuned.

Back to Sun’s head honcho’s blog entry, this is really great news! Now, if only Sun Philippines will provide better packages for education, then maybe we will have stronger Solaris presence in the country. In UP alone, we, at the Java Research & Development Center, wish that we can get our students to use Solaris on Sun hardware but the cost is a bit too much for them (or for our aging equipment in the center)… I wish that Jonathan notices this (trackback, get to work! eheheh) and decides to upgrade our equipment for free – for the love of Java and for JEDI, too! :P

Mine’s not included!

August 26, 2006

Apple has determined that certain lithium-ion batteries containing cells manufactured by Sony Corporation of Japan pose a safety risk that may result in overheating under rare circumstances.

The affected batteries were sold worldwide from October 2003 through August 2006 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4.

Apple is voluntarily recalling the affected batteries and has initiated a worldwide exchange program to provide eligible customers with a new replacement battery, free of charge. This program is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other international safety authorities.

Battery Exchange Program iBook G4 and PowerBook G4

Well, ever since Apple announced this Battery Recall, I have been trying to register my wife’s Powerbook and spare battery to the program. Unfortunately, I kept getting an invalid serial number (battery). I checked the battery model and serial number prefix and it falls within the criteria… until today! Yeah, I checked again and noticed that you need to check the suffix as well. Although the spare battery’s prefix started with 6N5, the suffix did not end with THTA/B/C!

So, for those who tried claiming for their replacement batteries, check the site again and see if your battery really falls within the defective batch!

David Pogue on Mac OS X and Viruses

August 26, 2006

If the Mac’s market share is five percent, then shouldn’t it have five percent of the viruses? It ought to have seen 5,700 viruses last year, not zero. Clearly, there’s something else at work here, and I’ll tell you what it is: Mac OS X is simply harder to hack.

Pogue’s Posts – Apple Changes Its Tunes on Viruses – Technology – New York Times Blog

Check out the entire piece. It is an interesting read. This goes true for Linux as well. :P

I need a new monitor!

August 24, 2006

Yeah, I think I need at least a 17″ LCD monitor to complement my MacBook Pro. No, I do not think that I’d get that 17″ MacBook Pro since it is a bit heavy. I am thinking of how I can afford an external display. Hmmmm..

You might be wondering why I suddenly need one. Unfortunately, I need to be able to multi-task effectively. New TV shows coming in from the iTunes Music Store eat up a huge portion of my 15″ screen! Unfortunately, the 5G iPod just does not cut it when I am using the MBP! :P

On a much more “professional” level, running XCode on 15″ inch plus Flock, Mail, iChat and Adium is impossible. Virtual desktops just do not cut it for me – yeah, Leopard’s Spaces will not work, unfortunately!

If only I could afford the Apple 20″ Cinema Display, then it’d be great! Unfortunately, it costs an arm and both legs!

Canon 400D

August 24, 2006

Open in new windowCanon today has revealed an update to its entry-level EOS Digital Rebel XT/350D digital SLR. Called the Digital Rebel XTi in North America, the EOS Kiss Digital X in Japan and the EOS 400D everywhere else, the new model is built around a 10.08 million image pixel CMOS sensor that, for the first time in a Canon digital SLR, incorporates an ultrasonic self-cleaning mode for removing dust particles from the sensor. While Canon is targeting the consumer with the Rebel XTi/400D, the new model looks to have just enough of the good stuff to serve as a viable backup camera for the pro digital SLR shooter.

Rob Galbraith DPI: Canon announces 10MP Rebel XTi/400D

Oh man! Here’s another one of those cameras that I’d like to have. I think this one will make my Canon D30 retire (well, maybe my brother will have use for it), my 350D goes to the wife and I get this one. hehehe…

Croatia leaps ahead of Philippines

August 23, 2006

The document includes the following guidelines:

  • Government institutions will choose and/or develop open source solutions as much as possible, instead of using closed source alternatives.
  • The government will support development of closed source solutions that use open standards for protocols and file formats, and which are developed in Croatia
  • The government will support the use of open source programs and open standards outside of its institutions.
  • The government will support the use of open source solutions in educational institutions; both closed and open source solutions will be equally presented to students.

NewsForge | Croatian government adopts open source software policy

If Croatia can do this, why can’t the Philippines? C’mon! We do not have to favor open source over proprietary solutions but we do have to make sure that open source solutions are always considered. Is it that difficult?
