Free 5-minute voice call anywhere!

January 31, 2007

The company that brought to you free voice calls to any number, pstn, cell or voip, to active members, is now bringing you one of the best, if not the best, web-based SIP-compliant voip client, called GizmoCall.

What makes it even better is each day, it gives you a free 5-minute credit to call any telephone, anywhere. Register and get an additional 5 minutes! How cool is that?

The catch? You need to download a Flash-based plug-in. Currently works on Mac OS X and Windows. With Flash 9 recently released for Linux, Linux support will soon be added.

Blogging from mobile

January 30, 2007

I’m typing this from my E61 just outside our gates, whilst waiting for JP. :)

Edit: One thing that is difficult to do with a new cellphone with new interface is the way you enter/type text. It definitely takes a few days getting used to the new interface.

Score another one for the little guy

Microsoft backpedals on programming patent | CNET News.com:

Microsoft plans to withdraw an attempt to patent technology already used in a free Java programming project called BlueJ, the company said Sunday.

The school bully failed and now retracts. It pays to be vigilant and I am betting that the Java Champions were able to help the little guy beat the school bully.

Microsoft rips off academic community?

January 28, 2007

Michael’s Random Thoughts » Microsoft patents BlueJ:

Microsoft applies for patent for core BlueJ functionality.

And that’s really true. After blatantly copying BlueJ (without reference or attribution), Microsoft have now filed for patent for the functionality they knowingly copied from us.

Dr. Michael Kolling, one of the prime developers of BlueJ, blogged about how Microsoft admittedly copied a feature of BlueJ. Now, Microsoft files a patent and claims ownership. Isn’t this another one of Microsoft’s bullying tactics? You be the judge.

Closing the iPhone

January 27, 2007

Granting that Apple is not going to allow third-party applications to be installed in the iPhone, I began re-thinking why I want a phone that is “open”. The only reason is the limited (read: crappy!) applications that are bundled with the phone. Third-party developers often answer that need. What apps do I want in the iPhone anyway?

BSSE: Importance of Industry Experience

January 25, 2007

FOSS Security Feature

January 24, 2007

Manila Bulletin Online: FOSS Security:

As the Internet grew rapidly over the years, it enabled collaboration resulting in several open source communities. The collaborative efforts of these communities have resulted to open source alternatives for almost all proprietary software. These open source solutions allows the user to use it the way he wants either for customizing it for his specific needs or for designing a commercial solution based on it. GNU General Public License (GPL) is the most commonly used license for this purpose. The derived solutions based on open source software should be distributed along with the source code and the recipient should get the same rights with which the original source is distributed.

Congratulations to Abbi! Welcome to Manila Bulletin. :)
