Plain Stock Firefox

July 9, 2006

I am back to the plain old stock interface of Firefox despite the numerous themes available out there. Why? I have no choice! :D I am now testing Firefox 2.0 beta 1 and all themes and plug-ins just won’t work until they release the next version. I just miss the theme and the video downloader and tab-mix plug-ins. I have not tried benchmarking it but hey, it is a new version, might as well test it. :D

Heads-up: Firefox 1.5.0.4

Firefox on Flickr – Photo Sharing!

Use Firefox’s Update feature to automatically download and install the new version. It fixes a lot of bugs and it is more stable.

Bon-Echo: Firefox 2.0 Alpha 3

June 1, 2006

I just installed Firefox 2.0 Alpha 3 over Firefox 1.5.0.3 (1.5.0.4 is expected to be released soon) and even though the extensions and themes are not yet compatible, Firefox 2.0 is indeed faster!

One feature that I just discovered is the Spell Checker. I was entering a comment on one of my friend’s blogs when one of the words was underlined (with red!) – right-clicking will give you options. Cool, huh? No plug-in, no extensions! :)

I have yet to test the anti-phishing features that is linked to Google.

Go ahead, try it out!

Javascript-based Image Reflection crashes Firefox 1.5.0.3

May 22, 2006

Reflection.js:

Reflection.js 1.5 allows you to add reflections to images on your webpages. It uses unobtrusive javascript to keep your code clean.

I am not sure if it is only because of the Firefox extensions that I have loaded but this site seems to crash my Firefox 1.5.0.3 on Mac OS X 10.4.6. Can you try it out?

Flock!

May 10, 2006

Thanks to my browser tester, joel, I am now testing Flock. So far, I like what I am seeing even though it is a nightly build version.

It looks very promising and once version 1.0 comes out, this may be one of my main browsers along with Safari and Camino. :P

Explorer Destroyer!

April 27, 2006

Well, I still do not want those IE-loving Microserfs to be blocked out of the site but as soon as the number of IE-using visitors decreases, I will take some drastic actions. :P

Heads-up: Firefox 1.5.0.2

April 15, 2006

Mozilla Foundation just released Firefox 1.5.0.2. Here’s what’s new:

  • Universal Binary support for Mac OS X which provides native support for Macintosh with Intel Core processors. Firefox supports the enhancements to performance introduced by the new MacIntel chipsets.
  • Improvements to product stability.
  • Several security fixes.

As for me, I am using Minefield, which is Firefox 3.0 alpha 1. :P

ajaxWrite on Mac OS X

March 24, 2006

I just launched ajaxWrite on my powerbook and true enough, it does not support Safari! Tough luck! Hehehe…
Here is how it looks like on Camino. Looks great, huh? I was spoofing a browser by using “IE 7 on Vista” as my User-Agent and ajaxWrite kicked me out! Great job! I then changed it to “Firefox 1.5 on Mac” and it works! :)
ajaxWrite on Camino
Unfortunately, not all functions work on Camino – even if uses the same engine as Firefox. Try changing the font and it will not respond. Yeah, weird!
Here’s how it looks like on Firefox. YMMV depending on your installed theme, of course. To me, this one looks like Safari and I love it! hehehe.
ajaxWrite on Firefox
Unfortunately, it spat out this error message when I tried to save the document. I wonder if the site has been dugg already. :)

Overall, I think it is promising. However, I still love the collaboration features as well as the version control of Writely.

Michael Robertson fires first salvo of software revolution with ajaxWrite

March 24, 2006

Michael Robertson fires first salvo of software revolution with ajaxWrite:

Michael Robertson of Linspire and SIPPhone fame is launching a new AJAX application every week for six weeks, starting with a word processor dubbed ajaxWrite, and Ars has exclusive information straight from the man himself. Should Microsoft be worried?

Another “Web 2.0″ application that does what Google’s Writely does but with more (or less, depending on how you look at it). ajaxWrite is a Firefox-only web-application! Half of me says “Great! Another feather to Firefox’s cap!” but the other half is wishing that Safari will be supported in the near future – don’t care if MS IE is not supported at all (and frankly, I pray that it will never be supported!).

Anyway, I will be testing this application and do some comparisons with Writely. However, one thing that I like about Writely is the fact that it is a collaborative-application. I hope that ajaxWrite provides the same thing. Watch this space for that comparison.

So, what do you think of the resurgence of these Web 2.0 ajax-based applications? Do they spell doom for Microsoft’s Office suite? How about OpenOffice.org’s office suite? I smell a very good project somewhere between the lines but I will have to check with my developer-pool first if they are interested. :)
