Krispy Kreme

December 29, 2006

The other day, I went to SM Megamall to buy my mom a birthday gift (happy birthday, mom!) and on the way home, I decided to grab some doughnuts at the newly opened Krispy Kreme branch. I thought of just buying some for merienda for my parents, siblings, my wife and kids. I ended up buying 3 dozens – a dozen of their original glazed doughnuts and 2 dozens of assorted doughnuts.
How did the KK doughnuts rate? The kids, who are all sugar addicts (at least until Dec. 31, 2006 — they will have healthier diet starting this 2007), loved ‘em. The wife found it as nothing special – specially the flavoured ones. My parents, who are not fond of sweets except for chocolates, did not like it either. As for me, it is nothing really special — in fact, I found it extremely sweet! BUT it is a good companion to your triple-shot espresso with no sugar whatsoever! Believe me, the sugar in those KK doughnuts can kill you!

Strike Three

December 5, 2006

Well, it seems like this will be the last one for me for the year. No, I am not talking about blogging, silly. I am talking about my third (and possibly the last) Starbucks 2007 Planner of the year. Got the third one the other day and since I am making my own coffee (thanks to the coffee press that my friends got me not too long ago), I can get my caffeine-boost anytime and at a close to unlimited amount (which reminds me, time to buy a pound of coffee beans). I prefer the press over the coffee maker – it is easier to clean. :P

So, unlike last year when I got more than 5, if I remember correctly, this year, 3 is more than enough. :)

Weird, huh? Just when I found out that coffee is good for you.

Places to avoid

Oishi Manju at Ever Gotesco CommonwealthRecently, my wife and I made some disgusting discoveries. First is this one from one of the food stalls in Ever Gotesco Commonwealth called Oishi Manju. The stall sells some sort of a cake infused with custard or mango cream. Anyway, if this is the way food is handled, it is a good thing that we have not bought anything from this stall. Whew!

There were two other discoveries – both at The Block, SM North EDSA’s new addition to its growing mall structure. First is the japanese restaurant called Kimono Ken. My family loves japanese food – heck, you will see us at Saisaki and Sakesan at SM Megamall more often that seeing us at a McDonald’s fast food restaurant!

Steamed Fish at Flavours of China
Anyway, the food at Kimono Ken is average but their service really sucks! I do not know if it was because the crew was new or something but heck, weren’t they supposed to be faster when they just opened? If you are craving for sushi, prepare to spare more than 40 minutes to wait for your food to arrive. For us, we just blacklisted this restaurant, sorry.

Next is the Flavors of China, also at The Block. We were supposed to go to Burgoo but decided to have chinese food instead. You’d never go wrong with chinese food. Surprise! This one really messed it up! We had a false impression that they were owned by Superbowl chain of chinese restaurants but we were wrong. The food sucks! The dimsum was sooo cold that we had to ask them to microwave it! Shesh! Their service is at par with Kimono Ken – yeah, really slow. I mean, how long does it take you to prepare Crispy Fried noodles with assorted seafood and crispy fried squid along with this steamed fish? C’mon – Superbowl can do it in 15 minutes tops but Flavors of China? No, it takes longer and at the price, their service size is too little compared to what we’re used to. Oh well – another restaurant to avoid! Don’t say I did not warn you. :D

Chicken Inasal?

June 14, 2006

I was too hungry one Summer day and decided to have lunch at UP’s Tea Room. I ordered this

They called it Chicken Inasal. Frankly, it was nothing near Chicken Inasal. If not for the vinegar that came with it, the chicken was bland.

If I were to rate this on a scale of 1-5, with 5 as the highest, I will give it a 1. OK, I can give it a 2 but that is already pushing it a bit. I know that there are other food in their menu so if you were to ask me, stay away from this!

Banana Mocha Frappe Lite

Banana Mocha Frappe Lite

Summer brings in new drinks from Starbucks. Here is one of them – banana mocha frappe lite. Tried the banana caramel frappe already but found it too sweet. I don’t drink cream-based frappes and that was what the other variant is.

Anyway, this one tastes ok but nothing still beats the caramel macchiato, at least for me. :D
