LF: E61 Blogging Client

February 18, 2007

My New Nokia E61Well, I am thinking of blogging whilst on the go and the best way to do this is to blog on my mobile phone. Whilst I can connect to the internet (thanks to 3G!) and blog, it is always easier to blog off-line and then simply upload the entries anytime I want.

I figure that if I am to cover an event, like the JavaOne keynote, it’d be great if I can get it done off-line. Yeah, Moscone is covered with wifi but I still would like to do it in one go, if you know what I mean. I can blog using my Macbook Pro, of course, but have you seen how jampacked these keynotes are? It is a good thing that I’m already an Alumni – so I get priority seating. I wonder if they can give better seats for press people. :)

So, if you know of any E61 Blogging client, please do let me know.

IMified Entry

I am testing IMified, a cool new service that allows you to connect to services like Notes, Reminders, Todos, Google Calendar and even your blog, like what I am doing.

Free 5-minute voice call anywhere!

January 31, 2007

The company that brought to you free voice calls to any number, pstn, cell or voip, to active members, is now bringing you one of the best, if not the best, web-based SIP-compliant voip client, called GizmoCall.

What makes it even better is each day, it gives you a free 5-minute credit to call any telephone, anywhere. Register and get an additional 5 minutes! How cool is that?

The catch? You need to download a Flash-based plug-in. Currently works on Mac OS X and Windows. With Flash 9 recently released for Linux, Linux support will soon be added.

Blogging from mobile

January 30, 2007

I’m typing this from my E61 just outside our gates, whilst waiting for JP. :)

Edit: One thing that is difficult to do with a new cellphone with new interface is the way you enter/type text. It definitely takes a few days getting used to the new interface.

Closing the iPhone

January 27, 2007

Granting that Apple is not going to allow third-party applications to be installed in the iPhone, I began re-thinking why I want a phone that is “open”. The only reason is the limited (read: crappy!) applications that are bundled with the phone. Third-party developers often answer that need. What apps do I want in the iPhone anyway?

The big heavyweight ball and chain

January 14, 2007

Ultimate iPhone FAQs List, Part 2:

Jobs: “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”

I am wondering if Jobs even has a clue that mobile Java is different compared to the desktop Java that Apple implements themselves and bundles with Mac OS X. Java ME, or Mobile Edition to those who live under a rock, requires such a small footprint that adding it to a 4GB pseudo-Mac OS X-running wanna-be smartphone shouldn’t be an issue. C’mon, if you can add Flash, why not Java ME?

Heck, I expect the iPhone to come with CDC (Connected Device Configuration) since it is oh-so-powerful. However, considering that Jobs wants a closed-platform, then I do not see the need to even add Java ME. Bummer!

My new non-iPhone mobile phone

January 14, 2007

Nokia E61
Out of disappointment for not being able to get an Apple iPhone until 2008, I settled for the next, more affordable phone, the Nokia E61.

Whilst it lacks all the bells and whistles of the iPhone, at least this unit gives me 3G, a removable battery, expandable memory (although with 8GB, I personally doubt I need more since playing video on the iPhone will require me to have the charger with me everywhere I go), QWERTY thumb-board and user-installable third-party applications. No, it does not have a camera but hey, I can always bring my trusty Canon compact camera or if I have more space in my bag, the 350D, right? :)

Five reasons why Apple’s iPhone sucks!

January 10, 2007

iPhoneYou must have heard, seen or read about Apple’s new all-in-one device that will revolutionize the mobile phone industry. I am sure that the other phone manufacturers are scrambling now – trying to figure out how they can come up with a better product as soon as possible. The problem is, the iPhone is peppered with patents, which will make it more difficult to copy.

What do I think about the new phone?

Bringing back that Kodak Moment

January 2, 2007

I found this over at TUAW and figured that it is another reason to wait for next week when CES starts at the same time as MacWorld. It will be a great week, next week, specially for gadget freaks and Apple addicts.

Going back to Kodak. Back in the late 1990s, I had the opportunity to know some Kodak engineers who were in-charge of the prosumer digital camera line. I had the opportunity to interact with them when it came to testing and reviewing their products. I just loved using their products more than the other camera brands. Personally, I find the Kodak colours perfect, i.e. no need to tweak them using your favorite photo editor. I still have my Kodak prosumer cameras, specifically the DigitaOS-enabled DC290, the last of its breed of highly programmable digital cameras.
