Bandwagon: start-up that is looking for a problem

February 17, 2007 by rom

I wrote about Xacktunes, now Bandwagon, before and now it is set to launch real soon.

Bandwagon helps make life easier for music geeks that backup using rsync/ftp or to cds + dvds.

Until our official launch on Feb 22 PST, we are giving away one-year subscriptions to Bandwagon. You get the full application and unlimited storage (need Mac OS 10.4 + iTunes 7).

What do I think?

Apple squashes MOAB bugs

February 16, 2007 by rom

BugApple releases Security Update 2007-02 that fixes several MOAB bugs that were reported last month. The bugs fixed are MOAB-09-01-2007, MOAB-29-01-2007, MOAB-20-01-2007 and MOAB-22-01-2007.

I do not know why Apple decided to delay the fixes for the other MOAB bugs – 31 reported bugs, 5 of which are from third-party software developers/companies. I am sure that the others will be addressed soon but the question is how soon?

Frankly, I’d rather not see 10.4.9 but instead see 10.5 released soon (with these bugs fixed!).

Java, lingua franca of Computer Science Education

February 15, 2007 by rom

The Java Phrasebook | Reg Developer:

It’s the language of choice for computer science education (emphasis mine) and is so ubiquitous in development that many programmers can follow Java code even if they’ve never had to write a line of Java code for themselves. However, for those non-Java developers who need a bit more than pidgin Java, help is at hand in the form of the Java Phrasebook by Timothy Fisher.

What I find rather interesting is why my department is insisting on using C as the first language when everyone else is going object-oriented. It’s ironic that we maintain that our program is not really aimed for industry, so industry demands is not really a major concern and yet, the use of C is dictated, afaik, by potential employers and donors (from industry).

Blast from the past

February 13, 2007 by rom

One of my neighbors, Manuel Viloria, in Vox, wrote about Nostalgia Manila, a blog site that brings you back in time when Voltes V reigns supreme. :) I checked it out and believe me, it brought back memories of my childhood. :)

Sleep is the key

February 13, 2007 by rom

Time for a nap

Siesta touted as defense against heart disease:

In fact, in a long-term study of Greek men and women, the ones who took at least three 30-minute siestas every week had a 37 percent lower risk of heart-disease related death than those who skipped an afternoon snooze.

And I thought I was just one sleepy puppy. I use Pzizz to help me manage my powernaps. :) Heck, it even helps my kids and my wife get better sleep. I highly recommend it – works better if you have an iPod, though.
